What are the illusions of competence: Simple ways to solve it

Introduction

In this article we are going to see about what is illusion of competence? and how can you tackle it. It's very important to know about the illusion of competence when you are learning something new. Let's get into it briefly

  • Illusion Of Competence

An illusion of competence in learning is that when we understand something but we actually don't know to explain it. Illusions of competence in learning causes us to overestimate how much we actually we know about that topic.

You can see some of the illusions below

  1. Seeing information in front of you, such as reading doesn't mean you know it.
  2. Seeing / hearing someone come to a conclusion doesn't mean you know how to get that conclusion or to explain it in an argument
  3. Searching for information on google gives you the illusion that the information is on your brain, but in reality it just disappears after some time.
4.Spending lots of time on with the material doesn't mean you know it.

Now you know what is illusion of Competence and we can go to the next part of this blog to solve the illusion of competence.

Recall

  •  Many students predict that rereading is better than recalling. But in reality recalling is far more better than rereading. Recalling simply after you learn something whether it is a big paragraph or a little bit of information can greatly helps in building little neural hooks.
When you learn something new just try to recall the material for 30 seconds.
  • There are 4 slots in our working memory. By recalling what you have learnt and by doing it with spaced repetition can transform the information from your working memory to long term memory.
  • Recalling from the other place where you have been reading can greatly destroy the illusion of competence.

Test Yourself

  • Use the diffuse mode of thinking to test yourself what you have been actually gone through.
  • Discuss with people who are smarter than you and  also argue with them about the concept.
  • The order of the study should be read, recite aloud, take notes, ask yourself questions, review it.
  • Review notes as soon as possible whenever you are attending a lecture.
  • Explain it to someone who doesn't know what it is or explain it to yourself
By doing these 5 techniques you can easily understand what you are learning and you are testing yourself about the concept.

Making Mistakes

  •  Making mistakes are considered as the most important thing when you are learning something new whether it can be in sports, art, teaching etc. At the time when you're making a mistake it seems to have a sort of negative feeling in that particular time.
  • Making mistake is not as the same as failure. When you make a mistake you can fix it but when you fail in something you can only learn from it.
  • Mistakes teaches us and encourages us to do creative and innovative things
  • The shift in mindset can provide positive energy for discovering something new and better
