ONLINE courses are Trash - Why???

Online courses are waste of time I personally believe that pre - recorded online courses are waste of time and live community courses are awesome and in this blog I'm gonna tell you why?

We assume that online courses are the wealth of knowledge, yes it is but how many people actually completes the course? Statistics tells that only 3% of people finish the online course and I don't blame them because people equate Udemy and Netflix even though they have similar platforms and similar way to consume content they do two very different things to our brain

.

Netflix is a escape from the real world and it throws away cognitive load, whereas Udemy and Coursera throws cognitive load on your brain.

Netflix optimises for the most interesting piece of content, whereas online courses are not going to do that.

The most important piece of content in Udemy is chapter one and after a few chapters people quit off the course. The problem with pre recorded videos is that it's easy to quit and education is not about quitting education is about trying to get to the finish line. It's all about getting all those information and the application of that information in your brain which is so difficult because it is easy to quit.

Why it happens?

It is a cheap course, you are working in isolation, you've saved a lot of money but you're not getting an outcome no outcome in what you're doing and because these courses are pirated to each other on Telegram groups and other social media apps we are creating a generation of early quitters.

Education is hard and people find it very easy to quit and this is the reason why colleges have 75% attendance system because they know it's easy to quit if they create 0% attendance system people are not going to go to the college.

The 3 important aspects of education

  • Accountability
  • Assignments
  • Consequences
Accountability

You've create accountability a team sport you make people play with each other and the minute you put somebody in a team and they are now responsible because if you leave the team your friends are gonna be upset with you, some people actually leave despite this and we've seen this in the past but regardless of that accountability reduces the chance of you will quit we have to do everything in our power to make you don't quit

Assignments

Even though Coursera has MCQ type assignments they are not the application of the subject and people will find boring to just reproduce content basically you're taking in content and vomitting it out. But where real value is added is in the assignments if somebody can give you a high quality assignment and correct that assignment and give your personal feedback people want education to be personalized.

So it is also the human part of the things, the mentors, personal assistants and anyone who personally helps you that's why it is impossible to bring live courses to just 100 rupees.

Consequences

If you are in school or college you need to pass the exam, if you don't you need to repeat the next year. If you don't have 75% attendance you will get suspended from the college and it is not same with the online courses if you quit by saying
"uh this course is boring, I'm gonna quit" No body is gonna ask you.

"Humans without having something to lose don't stick"

If you want to learn somebody you must have
  • Access
  • Community
  • Accountability
  • Consequences and
  • Assignments
