Start with WHY

Introduction

Start with why is a book written by Simon Sinek. In this book, Simon tells us the importance of why in an organization. He covers the topics that are related to the long-term growth of a company's success and various factors which determines it i.e having a proper vision, good leadership qualities, decision-making qualities, etc. Let's have an overlook of all these things in this blog.

The story

There was a man named Langely who set out in the early 1900s, he was a senior at the Smithsonian Institution, and he had various contacts of the powerful men in the 1900s like Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Alva Edison, and many more and many of them believed that he will be the first man to build an airplane and he was also given 50,000 dollars as a fund for his project  [building an airplane].

And a few miles ago 2 brothers had a dream of building an airplane and they were working towards it. In their team there were no qualified persons, in fact, nobody in their team had finished a college education. There were no government grants, no funding for this project, no men to guide them, they had nothing. But they had a real vision, they were not motivated by fame, but they were motivated by their idea.

And as you know, On December 1903 a small group witnessed a man take flight for the first time in history. The Wright brothers did it and they shocked everybody in the world. The reason is they were scientists at heart.

Key points from start with why

  • Our outcomes are based on our decisions
  • Understand the value in things that others cannot see.
  • Inspired employees make for stronger companies and stronger companies make stronger economies
  • If fear motivates us to move away from something horrible, aspirational messages tempt us towards something desirable.

Most of the leaders started their journey with a very strong why. They had a vision toward the future, and once inspired they gave the same inspiration to the people who belong to their work.

Manipulation vs Inspiration

Every leader needs to motivate their employees to achieve their target, the target can be anything, and the motivation often comes from only 2 ways. Manipulation and inspiration.

Just try to understand the picture

But how do you start with why?

The golden circle is the visual depiction of an organization's structure and it looks like this
The Golden Circle in Start with why
The Golden Circle

Whenever you have to make a decision you have to start with why, then how, to what.
For example, let's take a look at apple organization's structure

Why - we make products differently, and we challenge the status quo
how - Well-designed, elegant, and structured
what - We just happen to make computers

And we can clearly see that apple's products are their profound why.

so why does the golden circle work?

  • It will work because it is rooted in human biology. Humans want to belong and the need is so powerful that we often put incredible efforts and money to belong in the same group of  people who believe in our beliefs.
  • The golden circle is so powerful and it only works if all the 3 elements are in balance the why, the how, and the what
  • First of all you should have the clarity of our why?
  • Having a why are just a belief and you need to turn that belief into reality.

Why everyone should start with why?

For example, let's say your why is to create a product that will change the status quo.
But you make products that are indistinguishable from other products in the market and eventually there is a 100% chance that your product will fail.

  • Authenticity will lead to long-term success
  • why is the future and how is the present
  • why are the dreamers and how is the constant work to your belief
  • Steve jobs had the why, Steve Woznick had the how
  • Walt Disney the why, Roy Disney the How

Conclusion

Do everything and think about everything with why. It can be anything from buying a book 📙, being in a relationship, anything you have to ask questions why? I am doing it. If you had found you why then move on to how then to what. So by doing this automatically you are improving when you have clarity of why you can take better decisions.

SO GO AND FIND YOUR WHY!!!!!!!
